Barghest - aka Black Shuck, Gyrtrash, Padfoot, Striker, Cu Sith, Hellhound
History
The two sides of the Barghest seem to be at odds with each other. However, they are more closely related than one might think. Barghest have always been fond of humans, which is why they decided to adopt the visage of man's best friend. Unfortunately human beings are not too comfortable with giant black dogs who have huge fangs and horns. While the spirits of humans who have passed are more than willing to welcome the company. The Barghest lead them and keep them company on their journey along the lay lines (corpse ways) to their destination. If they encounter any living human beings and the Barghest distrusts their motives, sometimes they will attack to protect their ward. Human spirits get stuck in the Dagis when they die in a traumatic event. Often times when on their travels, the spirits will tell their tales of woe and injustice to the Barghest. These tales often anger the Barghest enough that they feel the need to take revenge on those who hurt the spirit. Songs and poems have been created that relate these acts of retribution. Another legend about the Barghest is completely false. These tales say that they are harbingers of death. Barghest are merely attracted to those who will soon meet their ends, and are looking for the next wayward soul to help. They can smell the scent of Death, and often follow him to his final destination.
Description
Barghest are most commonly described as monstrous black shaggy dogs with glowing eyes. They vary in size from being that of large mastiff, up to the size of a large horse. Occasionally Barghest will appear in the form of headless people, and disappear in a ball of flame. This is usually as a way for Barghest to protest the execution of an innocent spirit. Rarely they will take on the forms of rabbits and cats, but these usually share similar odd characteristics of their canine form.
