Upir - aka Vampire, Vetalas, Adze, Peuchen, Bhuta, Tagalog
History
The Upir started off as a forsaken creature, barely able to survive on the meager Lonshin they absorbed. They often took the form of decaying corpses when they fed in their original home of Romania. This was for two reasons, one being they took their prey in cemeteries so it was a common sight. Secondly the sight of a walking corpse would startle any passerby into sheer panic and would cause them to flee. Their prey most commonly was freshly buried corpses, because they still had some of the cnila they so desired. This is actually where the concept of the blood draining dead come from. Humans would see dug up graves and a corpse with blood on its lips from where the Upir had been draining. People would come to the wild conclusion that the dead had come back to life to drain the living. Occasionally the Upir would take small creatures and drain them of their cnila, if they were unlucky enough to wander into any occupied graveyard. Their discovery of a new more fulfilling prey came purely by accident. During times of the plagues, humans would sometimes bury people who still had a spark of life left in them. Whether this was done by accident or with forethought, I cannot say. During these times the Upir would sometimes dig up a fresh corpse only to find a living person. These people were too weak to resist the Upir feeding on them, and the Upir found how much more satisfying cnila was from a live body. It invigorated them and gave them the strength that they had been longing for. So the Upir had now decided that they would no longer settle for mere scraps, but wanted the whole banquet. They are most commonly found in Eastern Europe, and places where superstition still grip small communities. Those that live among humans look down on them as lowly creatures, but still enjoy their company, if only to mock them.
Description
Many of the Upir were dazzled by the stories people had created about them, and they felt it fitting to fulfill these fantastical notions. Some Upir love to take on beautiful human forms to entice people into a false sense of security, before devouring their Lonshin as monstrous bat creatures. Their human forms are often attractive, but there are some telltale signs that it is an Upir. Their eyes will often have crimson flecks in them, and their teeth and ears are slightly elongated and pointy. They also will have webbing in between some of their fingers or toes, and have pale complexions. Other Upir prefer not to show themselves during draining at all. These members often take the form of an ordinary bat and roost somewhere within or near a victim’s house. They wait for nightfall and enter as the victim sleeps, in order to drain them of some of their Lonshin. Slowly over many nights they will drain these victims, leaving them everyday to become weaker and weaker. Most victims don’t even know they are being drained; they just have a general feeling of being sick and weak. The slow feedings often leave human’s immune systems vulnerable, and can cause them to easily fall ill and die from something as simple as a cold. Most Upir prefer not to take on the form of a walking corpse anymore, unless it is absolutely necessary.
