Equinfernal (Mareritt, Nøkk) - aka Kelpie, Nightmare, Nuggle, Tangi
History
The Equinfernal are two very different looking Dark Matter, and other than their equine features they might not have much in common. However, they also absorb the same form of Lonshin called Gigipah. The female Mareritt has always been fascinated by other creature’s ability to dream. Despite all the power Dark Matter posses, they have never been able to dream. Curiosity got the better of the Mareritt, and they would sneak into human’s rooms at night to watch them as they slept. Jealousy crept into the Mareritt’s subconscious, and they began plotting ways to make human’s dreamstates miserable. Sometimes it's noises to wake them up, other times it's whispering in ears to cause night terrors. Overtime It has become the preferred method to sit upon the sleepers chest and absorb their breath while they sleep. If the Mareritt becomes greedy and takes too much, it can lead to suffocation in the person's sleep.
Nøkk inhabit local rivers, lakes and tributaries of Northern Europe. Occasionally they will find their way out to sea, but tend to stay in the shallower areas. Nøkk's are the males of the breed, however this was not always the case. Originally the Equinfernal had both males and females in either form when they lived exclusively in Scandinavia. When the Vikings and English were struggling for power, the Mareritt decided to protect their land and fought alongside their Scandinavian countrymen. Unfortunately many of the Mareritt were struck down in those constant struggles. The Mareritt's did not want to see their breed perish as their lineage became watered down. So they started an alliance with the Nøkk, who took on the role as the male counterpart to the Mareritt females. In exchange the Mareritt would manipulate their dreamers into sleepwalking into the water where Nøkks reside. Before this it was difficult for the normally water based Nøkk to get prey. They would transform into a land based steed, and lure people to touch them. The Nokk are able to secrete a sticky slime much like that of the hagfish, and when touched will hold the unwary human fast to their skin. Afterward it is easy to drag a human into the water where the Nokk absorbs the breath of their prey as they drown. It is also very common for Nøkk to use a violin or other stringed instrument to lure a human to their watery grave. All of these luring tactics were extremely risky, as the Nøkk needs water to survive. On occasion there are still Male Mareritt and Female Nøkk found, but it is so rare that it is never spoken of. The Equinfernal are still found throughout Scandinavia, and have crept into much of the British Isles. Both Equinfernal seem to be one of the few breeds that have a general dislike for humans. Although only the Mareritt will take pleasure in tormenting people.
Description
The Mareritt often appear as a monstrous horse as they travel around the countryside looking for dreamers to torment. When they enter the rooms of sleeping victims their usual form is that of an old hag. If their victim wakes up, they will take on the guise of a frightening goblin before they disappear back into the night. Thus leaving their prey with a waking nightmare, that the Mareritt hopes will keep them up for many nights to come.
The Nøkk while in the water, appear almost as a giant prehistoric seahorse. On land they take on two forms while luring in prey. Sometimes they appear as a beautiful pony with hair that always looks wet, and skin that shimmers like that of a seal. Nøkk also take on the form of beautiful humans when they play their stringed instrument. In all forms the Nøkk is easy to spot, as their fish shaped pupil and gills are a dead give away.
